Exxon's Subsea Production System: producing oil/gas by remote control

Exxon's Subsea Production System (SPS) is now in operation in a full-scale pilot test. The installation is located 27 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La. in 170 ft of water. The SPS is a cluster of subsea wells and associated production controlling, separating and pumping equipment mounted on a subsea template structure. The equipment is remotely controlled and monitored from the surface by an electro-hydraulic supervisory control system. Wellbore equipment is serviced by pumpdown tools, and a remote manipulator operated from the surface is used to replace and maintain subsea equipment. Eight subsystems, of varying degrees of complexity, make up the SPS. They are template, drilling and completion, production manifold, remote control safety and shut-in, subsea pumps and separator, pipeline and pipeline connectors, production riser and floating facility and the maintenance manipulator.
