West Virginia won't ban mining in watersheds, but acid danger cited

West Virginia's Reclamation Commission is refusing to ban surface mining on 461 sq mile of the Buckhannon and Middle Four River watersheds. However, Commission members are urging the coal industry not to increase mining in the area because of 'the unavailability of technology to prevent acid mine drainage'. Some 250 mining operations were identified, of which about 33% were discharging water below quality Standards. Companies with major interest in the watersheds are Island Creek Coal and DLM Coal. All mining applications in the area are to be received by the newly-formed acid mine drainage task force.
