Resource evaluation studies based on recently obtained cores and electric logs suggest that at least 600,000,000 barrels of heavy oil are contained in the Santa Rosa Sandstone of the Jones Asphalt Mine Ranch lease in Guadalupe County, New Mexico. The lease covers an area of 11,173.3 acres of fee land. Primary extraction of oil sand by strip mining methods and upgrading by surface processing applied to 2000 acres will produce an estimated 114,000,000 barrels of oil. With the appropriate application of in situ and underground mine-assisted technologies to areas not amenable to strip mining, an additional 48,000,000 barrels are available for upgrading and refining to useful enery products. Development of heavy oil from the Santa Rosa Sandstone will contribute to the overall availability of energy resources needed for power and mobility fuels in the southwestern United States. Operations to produce at least 10,000 barrels of heavy oil per day from the 2000 explored acres will operate for at least 25-35 years and will be a financial benefit to the residents of the State of New Mexico and the nation. 7 figures, 4 tables.
