In 1977, the city of Lake Worth, Fla, purchased a GE MS5001P gas turbine for operation in a combined-cycle baseload mode. Seven years later, the utility decided to uprate the gas turbine with advanced technology parts to achieve additional output and extend the unit's life to the end of the century to meet. The machine was guaranteed gains of 6% in output and 3% in heat rate. The firing temperature was increased from 1730F to 1755F. The new parts also were expected to provide significant improvements in maintenance and operational reliability. Performance tests in both simple-cycle and combined-cycle configurations-before and after modification-confirmed that performance improvements were greater than expected.
