This paper describes a magneto-optical tranducer of alternating and pulse currents that provides high performance with a fairly simple design. The transducer is based on the Faraday effect. Some of the advantages of the transducer over the electromagnetic transformers and Rogowski loops that are traditionally used in the measurement of large alternating and pulse currents are discussed. The magneto-optical transducer described uses optical cables and bunched conductors to transmit luminous flux to the Faraday cell and back. The range of measurable currents is 1-10 kA. The measurement error is not over 1% for alternating currents of 50 Hz to 1 kHz and 5% for current pulses with rise times of greater than or equal to1 ..mu..sec.
