Unified criterion for the convective extinction of fuel particles
The extinction criterion for the buoyancy-generated stagnation point boundary flow of a burning fuel particle is derived using large activation energy asymptotics. An extinction factor which depends on the flame sheet solution is numerically determined, hence allowing direct evaluation of the criterion. Together with the existing extinction criteria for the forced flow stagnation point boundary layer and the convection-free spherically symmetric case, they provide limits on the susceptibility of extinction when subjected to convection of different nature and intensity. Their functional dependence on the various system parameters are also examined from a unified viewpoint. Trends exhibited by the criteria agree well with existing experimental data.
