Process and apparatus for continuous treatment of hydrocarbon oil with a metallic halide

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5323929

A process of treating hydrocarbon oil with anhydrous metallic halide comprises maintaining a bulk supply of hydrocarbon oil and metallic halide at a conversion temperature and undergoing a decomposing reaction in a reaction chamber, passing the evolved vapors from the reaction to a reflux tower, withdrawing reflux liquid from the reflux tower and circulating a part of the liquid through a heating zone and back into the reaction chamber, separating metallic halide sludge from the circulating liquid, and passing the metallic halide sludge back into the reaction chamber without passing through the heating zone. The apparatus for carrying out this process comprises a reaction chamber, a reflux tower operatively connected with the reaction chamber, a circulating line leading from the reflux tower through a heating zone and back into the reaction chamber, the line terminating in a plurality of jetting means within the reaction chamber whereby liquid from the line is caused to agitate the contents of the reaction chamber, separating means for separating metallic halide sludge from the liquid circulating in the line positioned in the line between the reflux tower, a heating zone, and a by-pass line for passing the metallic halide sludge thus separated back into the reaction chamber without passing through the heating zone.
