Can finger ring dosimeters be used to estimate the skin dose delivered by a hot particle deposited on a hand The experiments described in this article examine this question by testing the response of a commercial finger ring dosimeter to an irradiated fuel particle in configurations that simulated possible exposure geometries. The results indicate that finger ring dosimeters could underestimate the skin dose by several orders of magnitude, even if the particle rested on the finger that wore the dosimeter. To complicate matters, it is also possible for a finger ring to overestimate skin dose by a factor of five if the hot particle were deposited directly over the dosimeter. Corrections to account for finger ring dosimeter response to a hot particle are therefore possible only if the exact geometry of the exposure event is known.
