Ozone-induced alterations of K/sup +/ influx and efflux from Chlorella sorokiniana
The addition of ozone to a suspension of Chlorella sorokiniana causes a rapid loss of K/sup +/ (as measured by pre-labelling cells with /sup 86/RbCl as a tracer). While the medium and concentration of ozone has an effect on the kinetics, the loss always occurs and for 100 ppm ozone requires about 30 for 50% depletion of the cell's intracellular K/sup +/. The cessation of K/sup +/ loss after a 1 to 2 minute pulse of ozone requires from 10 to 15 minutes. On the other hand, the effect of ozone on the influx of K/sup +/ (as measured by /sup 86/RbCl) is greatly influenced by the medium and ozone concentration. The influx of K/sup +/ is inhibited by ozone only at high concentration for long periods of exposure (150 ppm for 5 minutes or 100 ppm for 20-25 minutes). At lower concentration or for short exposure times, the K/sup +/ influx is stimulated by 50-200%. It is thought that this stimulation is due to the loss of intracellular K/sup +/. Under conditions of high oxidant levels or long exposure periods, cells are unable to recover from this K/sup +/ loss.
