Plant water balance and susceptibility to damage by air pollution in sweet corn

Journal Article · · Plant Physiol.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5320594
Two commercial sweet corn hybrids, Zea mays L. (var. Bonanza, from the Ferry Morse Seed Co., and Monarch Advance, from the Northrup, King, and Co.) which differ in their response to air pollution (Cameron, 1975), were observed also to differ in leaf water potential and response to water stress. Leaf water potential for the resistant hybrid, Bonanza, was lower under conditions tested. Controlled exposures to ozone under partial water stress, which was induced with osmotic solutions of PEG-6000, indicate the stomata of the resistant hybrid is likewise more susceptible to closure. It is hypothesized that, in this case, stomatal closure due to the leaf water potential poise affords protection from damage by air pollution.
