Automotive batteries under current- or voltage- regulated charging conditions

Journal Article · · Proc. - Electrochem. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5320007
The value of cobalt as an automotive battery elixir has been assessed under both current-regulated (AS 2149 Test) and voltage-regulated (SAE J240a Test) charging conditions. Cobalt exerts a beneficial effect in the former but an antagonistic effect in the latter. Degradation in battery performance under voltage control is due to the depolarizing action of cobalt. This situation is unchanged with voltage limits between 14.8 and 13.8 V. Since present-day automobiles are fitted with voltage regulators, it is concluded that cobalt offers little promise of improving the service life of automotive batteries.
