Corrosion and growth of expanded grids for maintenance-free batteries

Journal Article · · Proc. - Electrochem. Soc.; (United States)

Corrosion and growth following float, open-circuit and cycling tests were determined for grids expanded from cast calcium-tin and low-antimony lead alloy strip. Comparisons were made with expanded wrought-strip, gravity-cast and continuously cast grids. Corrosion (weight loss) was linearly dependent on calcium or antimony content and was affected by solidification rate, the presence of tin, grain size and depth of discharge. For lead-calcium-tin alloys of fixed wire thickness, growth was linearly proportional to corrosion. This was attributed to the intergranular mode of the corrosion.
