The development of large superconducting generators is discussed for electric utility applications and addresses a number of specific needs of the utility industry. By replacing the conventional, copper conductor field winding in the rotor of a synchronous generator with a high-capacity superconducting winding that has virtually zero resistance at cryogenic temperatures, benefits can be achieved. 10 refs.
