Completion of a 49-megawatt combined-cycle cogeneration plant in late 1986 will allow Stanford University to save $5.3 million in avoided energy costs over the next 15 years without any capital outlay. The $50 million plant will be owned, operated, and maintained by Cardinal Cogen Co., which will sell electricity and steam to the university at market prices and return to the university an undisclosed percentage of the total revenues generated by the project by sellbacks to the utility. The system will provide all the university's electric and thermal needs.
