Hydrogen transfer reactions--6. Dependence of the catalytic activity of alumina on Na/sup +/ content and amine poisoning
On sodium-doped alumina catalysts (0, 0.95, and 2.2% sodium), with increasing sodium content, the dehydration of isopropanol decreased, hydrogen donation to benzaldehyde and cyclohexanone by isopropanol decreased somewhat, and the disproportionation of diphenylcarbinol decreased. These results and results obtained with pyridine- and piperidine-poisoned catalysts showed that these reactions were related to the acidity. A maximum dehydrogenation activity of diphenylcarbinol was obtained on the 0.95% Na catalyst, the 2.2% Na showed a slightly lower dehydrogenation activity, and the pure alumina was inactive for the reaction, which indicated that the reaction depends on a factor other than acidity.
