The effects of proton-induced defects on the properties of superconductor-normal-superconductor Josephson junctions with YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 2.79}Co{sub 0.21}O{sub 7} barriers have been investigated. The resistance (R) increases linearly and the critical current (I{sub c}) decreases exponentially with fluence, respectively. Changes in I{sub c} and R occur only at fluences which also reduce T{sub c}. The results indicate that point defects probably have little influence on the uniformity of the I{sub c} and R in junction arrays. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
