Resolving India's oil crisis

National survival requires that India reverse its steadily increasing consumption of imported oil, 60% of which is used in the transportation sector. A two-pronged program of electrifiction and efficient household fuels will allow India to move toward an oil-free transport system. Inefficient truck transport needs to be converted to rail for long distances, but raising the cost of diesel fuel would also increase kerosene prices. This would cause additional hardship for the poor, who use kerosene almost exclusively for household energy. A plan to provide rural electrification will allow kerosene and diesel prices to rise to the level of oil. Renewable fuels can be developed to provide transport fuels, while cattle wastes can be used to generate biogas and replace firewood. (DCK)
