Managers face their toughest challenge
Don D. Jordan, chairman of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), describes the major challenge managers face as improving the industry's financial health. He cites the availability and cost of money as the prime concern, but also blames the quality of regulation for current problems. Regulations, he feels, should be sensitive to current issues and flexible enough to respond to them. He sees advantages in utility diversification despite the need for caution when entering new competitive fields. During the interview, Jordan suggests changes in the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, advises aggressive communication with the public and industrial load management, and responds to questions covering a number of utility-related issues.
