Direct determination of atom and radical concentrations in thermal reactions of hydrocarbons and other gases. Progress report, January 1-December 31, 1983

During this period, we completed kinetic calculations and wrote papers on pyrolysis of benzene and toluene. We also made measurements and wrote a paper on the vibrational relaxation of O/sub 2/ in the presence of small amounts of He, H/sub 2/ and D/sub 2/, a physical process that is important to us in the study of gas mixtures that contain O/sub 2/. Kinetic calculations are continuing slowly to model our experimental results for the formation of H, D and O atom concentrations in shock heated mixtures of C/sub 2/H/sub 6/, C/sub 2/D/sub 6/, C/sub 3/H/sub 8/ and C/sub 3/D/sub 8/, each individually in the presence of O/sub 2/. We have made measurements of H and D concentrations in pyrolysis of several isotopically substituted propenes: CH/sub 2/ = CH - CD/sub 3/, CH/sub 2/ = CD - CH/sub 3/, and CD/sub 2/ = CH - CH/sub 3/. The data show comparable amounts of H and D formed from all the compounds, which suggests that more than one reaction channel is involved. We have most recently made measurements of the pyrolysis of butadiene and C/sub 2/D/sub 2/, and made measurements of the concentrations of both H and D for mixtures of neopentane - C/sub 2/D/sub 2/ and toluene - C/sub 2/D/sub 2/, the neopentane and toluene acting as sources of H so we can observe the addition of H to C/sub 2/D/sub 2/ and the subsequent dissociation of C/sub 2/D/sub 2/H to C/sub 2/HD and D. Calculations based on these results are in preliminary stages. Measurements of OH with C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ suggest that this reaction may be somewhat slower than previously reported.
