Products from sulfonation of petroleum residua

Conference · · Am. Chem. Soc., Div. Gas Fuel Chem., Prepr.; (United States)

In a search for new applications for resinous fractions derivable from asphalt, studies of sulfonation reactions of these substances have led to the development of an intermediate product which can be utilized to prepare either strong acid cation exchange materials or an activated gas-adsorbent carbon. The cation exchange materials have operating characteristics and stability resembling the commercial sulfonated coals, while adsorbent carbons of very high activity have been prepared.
