Superfund Record of Decision (EPA Region 2): Global Landfill, Middlesex County, NJ. (First remedial action), October 1991

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5315743

The 57.5-acre Global Landfill is an inactive solid waste disposal facility in Old Bridge Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Land use in the area is primarily residential. Onsite features include a 51-acre landfill, a 6.5-acre northwest landfill extension, and an inactive 1.7-acre leachate collection pond. From 1988 to 1991, EPA and State site investigations identified 63 buried 55-gallon drums containing hazardous wastes including VOCs, organics, and metals within both the waste mound and northwest extension. The Record of Decision (ROD) addresses Operable Unit 1 (OU1), the landfill wastes. The primary contaminants of concern affecting the soil and sediment are VOCs including benzene, PCE, TCE, toluene, and xylenes; other organics; and metals including arsenic, chromium, and lead. The selected remedial action for the site includes capping the landfill with a synthetic and clay cap; constructing a soil stabilization berm; constructing and operating a gas management system, and stormwater and leachate collection systems; pumping leachate and condensate from the gas collection system to a holding tank, and subsequently transporting the waste offsite for treatment and disposal.
