Diesel odor studies in a spray burner and a flow reactor

Thesis/Dissertation ·
OSTI ID:5315625
Two laboratory burners have been designed and built. These are an air aspirated spray burner and a prevaporized, premixed, preignition flow reactor. The effects of various combustion and system variables on the overall exhaust odor intensity of both burners were investigated. Odor measurements were made utilizing the Diesel Odor Analysis System (DOAS) developed by Arthur D. Little, Inc. The spray burner studies indicate that high odor production occurs when the burner is operated near its lean blowout limit and is a strong function of stoichiometry. Significant aerodynamic effects have also been observed. The preignition flow reactor studies demonstrate that considerable amounts of odorous compounds are formed in low temperature preignition reactions, with the formation rate being a function of temperature, stoichiometry and reactant concentrations.
