The Maitland wastewater treatment plant has demonstrated its ability to achieve complete nitrification of a high-strength industrial waste at temperature above 17/sup 0/C. The proposed waste heat utilization project will allow complete nitrification year-round. Batch and full-scale operating experience confirms that nitrification-denitrification plants treating complex industrial wastes having a high TKN content must be designed and operated on the basis of solids retention time control. Repeated economic evaluations have shown biological nitrification-denitrification to be the most cost-effective method of treating Du Pont's high-strength industrial waste.
