The influence of the exothermic process of combustion on the turbulent flow field where it occurs is studied by a numerical analysis based on Chorin's random vortex method. The algorithm models the action of elementary turbulent eddies and provides information on their cumulative effects without any distortion due to the computational technique. The technique is applied to the particular case of a combustion tunnel of rectangular cross-section where the flame is stabilized behind a back-facing step. For the sake of simplicity, the analysis is restricted by a formidable array of idealizations. The results mimick quite well the essential features of large scale turbulent pattern observed experimentally by means of schlieren photography with the use of a lean propane-air mixture as the flowing substance in the combustion tunnel. 10 refs.
