Ignition of a combustible mixture by an inert hot particle

The method of matched asymptotic expansions is applied through second order for the study of the ignition of a combustible mixture by an inert particle via steady state analysis. The activation energy is assumed to be large, and the inverse of a reduced activation energy /beta/ is taken as the perturbation parameter. The critical Damkohler number /DELTA/sub //c/sub r/ above which ignition is expected to occur is obtained up to 0(/beta/). This second order solution is in better agreement with the numerical calculation of the transient case than the first order solution of the steady case by Law in predicting the ignition criterion. The previously used ignition criterion of zero slope on the surface is found to occur after the ignition of the combustible mixture, and hence is justified. This work is pertinent to the penetration of projectiles through fuel tanks. 21 refs.
