Forging of powder metallurgy titanium compacts for improved properties and lower cost. [Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al]
- Boeing Commercial Airplane Co., Seattle, WA (USA)
The use of titanium alloy powder compacts as forging preforms was investigated in this work. The aim of this investigation was to explore the possibilities of obtaining mechanical properties above the level of cast and wrought material. In addition, the use of suitably shaped titanium PM compacts could lead to lower cost forged products by reducing the cost involved in making the preforms. Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al plasma rotating electrode process (PREP) powders were consolidated by hot isostatically press (HIP) and subsequently isothermally forged. Cast and wrought forgings of the same alloy compositions were used as a base-line material. The resulting microstructures and properties are discussed in detail.
