A series of cast Al-Si alloys (containing up to 9% Si) have been examined in the as-cast condition and after conventional aging treatments. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been employed to document the nature and distribution of the phases present. Similarly, the distribution of the casting porosity has been analyzed using standard stereological techniques and by high precision density measurements. The aged alloys have been Hot-Isostatically-Pressed (HIPed) over a range of temperatures, times, and pressures. The effect of the HIPing parameters, on both the second phase and pore distribution, has been documented.
