Polycrystalline specimens of B2 cobalt aluminumides of compositions (X) in the range 48.5 to 52.3 atomic % Co have been studied by the PUCOT (piezoelectric ultrasonic composite oscillator technique) for measurements of Young's modulus E and mechanical damping Q{sup {minus}1} as a function of temperature T in the range 300 to 1600 K. Both the temperature and composition dependences of modulus were found to be linear and the general relation E(X,T)=210.8+2.2X-0.08T was developed. Arrhenius plots of Q{sup {minus}1} for several alloys yielded activation energies in the range 0.3 to 0.4 eV. The results are discussed in terms of phase diagram confirmation and mechanisms.
