Effect of zirconia mixing route on densification of alumina reinforced with silicon carbide whiskers

Three different composite powders were prepared by mechanical mixing of SiC whiskers in Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles, ZrO{sub 2} coated SiC whiskers in Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles, and SiC whiskers in Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles coated with ZrO{sub 2}. High temperature aging of the aqueous solutions of zirconium sulfate containing Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles or SiC whiskers in the presence of urea was carried out for ZrO{sub 2} coating. Hot pressing was conducted to obtain fully densified Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} matrix composites. The densification characteristics of the composite powders were improved by the ZrO{sub 2} coating. The composite powder containing SiC whiskers coated with ZrO{sub 2} was excellent in densification compared to the composite powder containing Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} particles coated with ZrO{sub 2}.
