Poor ductility at low to intermediate temperatures seems to be the most serious obstacle to a wide application of TiAl alloys. Research reports that the tensile elongation of as-cast and homogenized alloys does not exceed 1%. A number of studies have been undertaken to seek improvement for the ductility of these materials, while most efforts concentrate on the element alloying and thermal processing of dual phase (alpha-2 and gamma phases) TiAl alloys. It was suggested that the presence of [beta] phase will also improve the ductility of TiAl alloys with lower aluminum content, and with the addition of chromium and niobium elements, since it has been reported that [beta] phase further improves the deformability in two phase Ti[sub 3]Al+Nb alloys. Recently, [beta] phase was found in microstructures with alpha-2 and gamma phases in some ternary TiAl alloys, but detailed reports about the mechanical properties of the three-phase TiAl alloys have rarely been made. This study focuses on the mechanical properties of a Ti-Al-Cr alloy, with [beta] phase.
