The matrix-isolated binary carbonyls, Fe(CO)/sub x/, x greater than or equal to 5, and Fe/sub 2/(CO)/sub y/, y=8,9, formed upon cocondensation of iron atoms with noble gas/CO gas mixtures have been investigated by infrared and Mossbauer spectroscopies.Assignments for the Mossbauer absorptions of these species are made. New information on the C-O stretching frequencies of Fe(CO) and Fe(CO)/sub 2/ has been obtained. The very low infrared stretching frequency (1898 cm/sup -1/) and the negative Mossbauer isomer shift (-0.60 mm/s) of Fe(CO) are evidence for a large d..pi --> pi..* interaction for this fragment.
