Set-aside areas, National Environmental Research Park, Savannah River Plant, Aiken, South Carolina

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5303237
This report has been prepared to give a detailed description of the ten existing Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) reserve sites at the Savannah River Plant (SRP). These areas were selected by SREL to represent the major vegetational communities of the SRP, and in 1967 were formally set aside by the Federal Manager of the SRP site to promote ecological research. The regional and local environmental settings as well as the physical descriptions of the sites and their major floral and faunal species are described; and the history, research accomplished, and current disposition of these areas reviewed. The purpose is to acquaint scientists with the potential for conducting future studies in these areas that provide protected habitats of a highly diverse nature and to provide a portion of the background information essential to the re-evaluation of the reserve system.
