The by-products from treating coal-tar pitch - especially those containing 3,4 benzophyrene (BP) - constitute a source of environmental contamination in the coking industry. A considerable amount of BP is continually formed in the process of the thermal reduction of bituminous coal, and it accumulates in the resinous products; the amount of it depends on the composition of the coals being coked, the coking temperature and the conditions under which the volatile substances leave the pyrolysis zone. Investigation of the kinetics of BP formation during thermal and oxidizing treatment of pitches - as well as when obtaining pitches during distillation - has indicated that lowering its heating temperature to 355/sup 0/C, and lowering the pitch-treatment temperature to 250-300/sup 0/C, makes it possible to slow down the BP formation reaction. Lowering the BP content in the pitches is made possible by oxidizing them using air at the heating temperatures recommended. The degree of BP conversion increase when adding ozone to the air in small amounts. The BP content in the end products can amount to 0.25-0.28% by mass, which is 10-15 times less than in pitches produced using the usual technology.
