A small probe was built for instantaneous and local measurements of temperature T and soot volume fraction fv in sooting flames. With this system, mean and fluctuating values of fv and T were measured in turbulent ethylene jet flames. The arrangement allowed simultaneous determinations of T and fv, so it was possible to determine the correlation between T and fv fluctuations. The measurements involved three flames in which the strength of the buoyancy effects was different. The study shows results that are different in the three flames and hence the influence of mixing on soot formation in turbulent flames.
