Today's gasoline concerns -- Injector plugging and valve seat wear

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5301181
Valve seat wear is a present concern due to the major reduction of lead anti-knock level to 0.1 g/gal as of January 1, 1986 and the proposed ultimate elimination by EPA. Engines designed for unleaded gasoline, of course, are safe. However, there are millions of engines designed for leaded gasoline that are still in service. These are vulnerable to excessive exhaust valve seat wear when operated under high speed/load conditions with very low lead gasolines. Both problem areas can be successfully controlled by additives in the gasolines. This discussion describes the cleanliness performance treatments for port fuel injection and the completely different unique non-lead treatment for valve seat anti-wear. Gasoline additives are commercially available today that provide full engine protection to the vehicle and equipment owners/operators.
