A method is described for the enhanced recovery of a viscous oil from a subterranean, oil-bearing formation by injecting steam into the formation through at least one injection well and producing oil from separate producing wells situated at an offset from the injection well. The improvement described here consists of: (a) substantially parallel horizontal production wells, and (b) a plurality of vertical injection wells located between each pair of adjacent parallel horizontal production wells and spaced apart along the center line between each of the pairs of parallel horizontal production wells at distances equal to the separation of the parallel horizontal production wells.
