Pion production near mid-rapidity in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Doubly differential cross sections for producing ..pi../sup +/ and ..pi../sup -/ were measured for several target-projectile combinations. They were /sup 40/Ar+C, Ca, and U at 1050A MeV and /sup 20/Ne+Be and NaF at 655A MeV. The ..pi../sup -//..pi../sup +/ ratios are smaller than those expected from several Coulomb effect calculations. The Ne+NaF..--> pi../sup -/ data exhibit a peak at 90/sup 0/ in the center of mass and p/sub ..pi../ = 0.4m/sub ..pi../c.
