Despite the broad range of work in research for hydrogen accumulators, LaNi/sub 5/ is still an unsurpassed material for this purpose because of its optimal characteristics. The existing and proposed technical designs of hydrogen accumulators, now used in the fields of transport, purification, and compression of gases, are based on the use of LaNi/sub 5/ as the working and standard material. The large-scale use of LaNi/sub 5/ has made it necessary to investigate interactions of intermetallic compounds with container materials, in view of the fact that LaNi/sub 5/, becoming finely powdered during use (particle size 3-4..mu..m), becomes extremely reactive. There is no information in the literature on such interactions. The purpose of the present work was to study the interaction of LaNi/sub 5/ with iron and nickel under extremal conditions of use of the intermetallic compound LaNi/sub 5/.
