Defining the transportation market for Pneumatic Capsule Pipelines

Conference · · Coal Technol. (Houston); (United States)
OSTI ID:5296153
For a brief summary of the main purpose of my presentation, I would point to the fact that Tubexpress competes generally with over-the-road truck and short haul rail in the field of coal transportation. In a sense, Tubexpress economics begin where conveyors end and continue to the point where unit trains and coal slurry pipelines begin. Wherever trucks are used today to haul coal on dedicated runs under long-term commitments, the chances are Tubexpress can save money. As it is capital intensive with very low operating cost, Tubexpress transportation charges are essentially flat over the entire contract term. As the system uses coal-fired electricity, it saves on diesel fuel used by trucks and railroads. Though the concept is still novel and will not have seen commercial operation until a year hence, it has reached a stage of development where it can be considered as a viable alternative to move coal over intermediate distances.
