Lichens are a combination of fungi and algae which live in a symbiotic partnership. This partnership is so delicate that a slight change in the environment or exposure to toxic substances in the air can destroy the lichen. Researchers have noticed that by mapping the distribution of lichens in and around an urban area that they can pinpoint areas of increased air pollution. This paper examines the possible use of lichens as biological indicators of some types of air pollution. 11 figures.
