Pulsed laser deposition of Y[sub 1]Ba[sub 2]Cu[sub 3]O[sub 7[minus][delta]] films grown at heater temperatures of 720 and 800 [degree]C on SrTiO[sub 3] and MgO substrates, with thicknesses ranging from a nominal 5 unit cells to 200 nm, were studied by STM and SEM. The size and density of particles present in the films were found to depend on film thickness, growth temperature, and substrate material. STM images indicate a correlation between film growth mode and particle density: the onset of big particles comes only after the growth mode changes from layer-like to island growth and the islands have grown in size.
