In the reactions of alloys in the Zr-Ni and Zr-Ni-La systems with hydrogen the conditions for the hydridation of zirconium present in the alloys of the Zr-Ni system are determined by the amount of Zr/sub 2/Ni in the alloy. However, the presence of lanthanum in alloys of the Zr-Ni-La systems also has an appreciable influence on the conditions required for the hydridation of zirconium, leading to the possibility of preparing ZrH/sub 2/ at room temperature under a pressure of 3-4 MPa in presence of the compound Zr/sub 2/Ni and La in the course of 5-10 min. The reaction of hydrogen with the intermetal compound Zr/sub 2/Ni was investigated. The hydridation of Zr/sub 2/Ni at 20/sup 0/C under a hydrogen pressure of 3.5 MPa is accompanied by the partial hydrogenolysis of the compound with the formation of ZrH/sub 2/. When the synthesis is conducted at 20/sup 0/C under conditions of hydrogen deficiency the hydride phase Zr/sub 2/NiH/sub 4.9/ is formed
