European Atlantic margin: more drilling required

Journal Article · · World Oil; (United States)

Most sedimentary basins of the West European continental shelf and slope are at an early stage of evaluation. Oil has been found off Spain's north coast and Ireland's south coast, but the discoveries have not been evaluated. Commercial gas has been found off the Irish coast and in the Irish Sea west of Britain. Extensive drilling off Portugal and southwestern France has been disappointing. Some of the basins extend into deep water and in 1977, the first two wells were drilled west of Ireland in waters 1,550 to 1,600 feet deep. Appraisal of some of the promising offshore basins has been delayed by boundary disputes. Until more wells have been drilled, potential of the West European basins remains problematical.
