Results from a visual survey of all 2712 Abell clusters

An account is given of three categories of statistically significant results obtained from morphological data in an optical survey of all 2712 Abell clusters cataloged by Struble and Rood (1987). In the first category are found differences in cluster properties of different Rood-Sastry (1971) type; in the second category lies evidence of cluster evolution, namely cD cluster behavior as a function of redshift, changes in the characteristics of the three brightest galaxies with distance and class, and changes in the fractional distribution of Rood-Sastry types with distance class. The final category involves selection effects related to foreground/background superpositions, galaxy surface number density, and luminous cluster members' surface brightness. 43 references.
