This patent describes a process for reversing a crosslinked polymer gel. It comprises preparing a crosslinked polymer gel comprising an acrylamide-containing polymer, a crosslinking agent and a degelling agent precursor; hydrolyzing the precursor to a degelling agent; and reacting the degelling agent with the gel to reverse the gel. This patent also describes a process for placing a crosslinked polymer gel in a subterranean formation and subsequently reversing the gel in situ. It comprises preparing a crosslinked polymer gel by combining a crosslinkable polymer, a crosslinking agent and a degelling agent precursor in solution; injecting the crosslinked polymer gel into a subterranean formation and placing the gel in a desired treatment region of the formation; hydrolyzing the precursor to a degelling agent in situ; and complexing the degelling agent with the crosslinking agent to reverse the gel in situ.
