Thermal synthesis protection relay increases pump and motor life

Conference · · Soc. Pet. Eng. AIME, Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5292875
A solid-state relay using a method new to the petroleum industry has been applied to the protection of three-phase submersible pumps and motors. The method consists of a thermal synthesis model of heating that occurs in motors due to electrical abnormalities. Conventional relays monitor only line current magnitude or average magnitude of unbalance. The Thermal Synthesis Relay monitors and analyzes all electrical components that contribute to heating. The relay interrupts the motor on the basis of an inverse timeheat curve, not the conventional time-current curve.
