Electrochemical reduction of thionyl chloride and sulfuryl

Journal Article · · Proc. - Electrochem. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5292267
The electrochemical behavior of thionyl chloride and sulfuryl chloride was studied in acetonitrile. The reduction of both thionyl chloride and sulfuryl-chloride appears to proceed by a series of coupled electrochemical and chemical reactions. Some elucidation of these reaction pathways has been obtained by using a variety of electrochemical techniques including cyclic voltammetry and coulometry. Both reductions produce sulfur dioxide which may be further reduced. The possibility that SO/sub 2/ can be reduced in a battery changes the number of equivalents of electrons to 2.5 for SOCl/sub 2/ and 3.0 for SO/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/. This reduction of SO/sub 2/ may be discharge rate dependent. 7 refs.
