The microcomputer is rapidly replacing mainframes and minis in many applications. The continued development of microcomputers and local area networks could see the complete extinction of mainframes come quickly. Microprocessor CPUs with the power of today's small mainframes will be common by 1985. It is probable that in ten years time the only commercial mainframes in existence will be the scientific supercomputers for weather prediction and other massive single stream computations.
