Effect of phosphorus and other promoters on CoMo alumina hydrotreating catalysts

Three series of catalysts were prepared and tested in a naptha hydrotreating bench reactor. One-step versus two-step impregnations, one-step with variation of commerical supports, and one-step with wt % P from 0 to 2.5 were investigated. The results indicated that one-step impregnations with H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/ produce a more active catalyst for denitrogenation with hydrogen. Variation in the type of alumina support can also influence the catalytic activty. These non-metals can now be added to the list of catalyst promoters along with Co and Ni because their actions can yield improved N or S removal. Their promoting effect is certainly physical, but chemical action cannot be disregarded. Further research is needed to try to separate the two.
