A review covers general process technologies available for meeting best practical technology standards for refineries; the projected cost of refinery pollution abatement; the design of an 8200 cu m/day refinery wastewater treatment plant; the effect of adding powdered activated carbon to the aeration section of an activated sludge process; the use of rotating biological treatment units for the treatment of petroleum refinery wastewaters; a model for oxygen utilization in nitrification design for ammonia-containing wastewaters; pilot studies on the application of ozone or hydrogen peroxide for the emergency oxidation of API separator effluent in the event of upsets in normal biological processes; the use of dual-media filters for removal of oil and suspended solids from API separator effluent; improvements in refinery sludge processes achieved by a two-step process of gravity and pressure dewatering; the installation of a sour-water stripper expected to reduce wastewater H/sub 2/S concentration by 99.9% at a western refinery; and a multilaboratory analytical program for determining oil and grease concentration in industrial wastewater.
